Hovercraft performing Aerial Maneuvers

Okay, so my title might be just a wee bit misleading ... but for all that I still think its fairly accurate ;)

After being away so long I was anxious to join in on one of my favorite blogger activities.  I'd  been waiting for Carmi to announce this weeks theme, but when I saw it was "Aerial" my heart fell.  I haven't been on a plane for more years than I can count, and I didn't take up photography until after I'd moved down from the mountains into the flat lands.

When I decided 'flight' might work I was still stumped, because I've already shown y'all most of my 'flying' shots.  I'd forgotten this one that was in a batch of photos taken a few years ago when I was in Maryland that have never gotten processed because I went to work soon after and was doing quite a bit of overtime.  I'm glad I took a peek in that folder as it includes quite a few pictures that I'd forgotten about altogether.  I was there for a few weeks and had gone to Washington DC, and we were close to Amish country.  My camera was fairly new and I was very into documenting the whole trip.

I got very lucky with this shot.  It was handheld and taken through a window and a screen.  It had been raining, but just before sunset the rain ended and the sun broke through the clouds lending a surreal light.  The hummers were buzzing around a feeder in the backyard.  The feeder was red and reflected back on the bird accounting for the rosy glow you see on the bird's breast.

If you'd like to see more interpretations of "Aerial", or have some of your own to share, hop on over to Written Ink and join in the fun.

  2. Superb photo, Sally. I’d love to see one of those in real life.

I’ve got a few pictures I could be showing on this theme; from when I used to fly gliders. Maybe another time.

A Cappelli - It's good to be back.

Mask - In real life all I see is a blur and a hum. Oh please DO show those photos! I'd love to see them. I always wanted to do that.

Twain - Love that profile pic

OT - Thanks for stopping by

  6. I think that title is a perfect description of a hummingbird. I just pulled my feeder out and need to find the right place here at the cottage. I moved 4 miles from my old place. So we're gradually getting birds coming to the feeder.

  7. Hi Barb - I wish I could put out a feeder but that would just be cruel. I'd be setting the little guys up. Sis's cats love to hunt, so my bird bath sits empty and I won't get a feeder. I bury enough critters without encouraging them.

  9. Hi Sally,
What a stunning photograph of a beautiful little bird! Sadly, a bird I am unlikely to see in the flesh as it were!

  11. Hi John - Thank you. Do you not have hummers where you are? Or is it just that type?

Thanks Kara. I can't believe I stayed away for so long. Just got lost, too far up in my own head to interact. Who knew all I had to do was click those damn slippers?

  12. Hand-held, and through glass and a screen?! Astonishing! Great pic, and excellent interpretation of aerial.

  13. Welcome Mark, and thank you. As I said I got very lucky. I remember thinking that this was never going to work, but they came so close as long as I was inside, the second I stepped out the door they would disperse. I took lots and LOTS of shots ... this was the best of the lot.

  15. That photo was taken *through a screen*? Are you serious? It is SO clear! Beautiful!

  16. Thanks Julie ... I will, it's what I do (when I'm being social anyways) but I'm not always THAT lucky.

OMS - Thank you, and Welcome to Functional Kaos. Methinks it had something to do with the window being on the shaded side of the house, wet and dark, and the fact I had the telephoto extended and was fortunate that the auto focus actually zeroed in on the bird that rendered the screen invisible. Just a guess though.

  17. ohhh fantastic shot! how awesome to have such gorgeous creatures around. We don't have hummingbirds in the Southern Hemisphere, I'm sad to say...

ok - I was struggling with the aerial concept too, but you've given me some inspiration
    :)

  22. Quiet day today Julie, and I just went and checked it out, very nice. Comments are monitored at WI now, I wonder if Carmi had some problem while I was MIA, but it takes some time for them to be approved ... I'm sure he'll get to it later today.

  26. Amazing picture, takes a lot of patience, or luck, and talent to get a picture that great.

  27. Major boo-yah on this one! I cheered when it first loaded...a perfectly unique take on the theme. I have no idea how you managed to snag such a pitch perfect shot of an incredibly difficult-to-shoot bird - and I'll be marvelling at this one for days - but I'm glad you did. And I'm glad you kept at it till you remembered it.

    Wow, wow, wow!

  28. That photo is AMAZING.

I wish that my mother was still alive, she loved her hummingbirds and it would've been the perfect gift [asking nicely to purchase a copy from you of course] to give to her.

I can't believe you got that shot through a screen, window and the rain.

Can I have your camera? Better yet, may I have your skill? giggle

    Nicely done Sally.
